Following the August Convention, TR returned to Chicago to campaign.
During one campaign trip in October 1912 an assassination attempt
was made which wounded him and caused a brief hospitalization
in Chicago at Mercy Hospital. It is believed these photos were
taken during that October visit.

Following his electoral defeat in 1912, TR tried campaigning
for the Progressive Party for a number of years before his death
in 1919. But the Party had peaked with his candidacy in 1912 and
by 1916 would be virtually finished as a force in American politics.
During this visit to Chicago on October 19, 1914 TR was seeking
to build support for the Progressive Party candidates for the
U.S. Senate. His mood is decidedly more somber than in the early
ebullient days of the 1912 campaign.
