| Harry McShane, age 16 at the time of the photo, had been working
in a spring-making factory since he was 13 or 14. Three months
before this photo was taken, Harry caught his left arm in a machine
at the factory and the arm was ripped off at the shoulder and
his right leg was broken through the kneecap. According to Hines'
inscription on this photo, "No attention was paid by employer
to the boy either in hospital or at home . . . no compensation."
