Harry McShane, age 16 at the time of the photo, had been working in a spring-making factory since he was 13 or 14. Three months before this photo was taken, Harry caught his left arm in a machine at the factory and the arm was ripped off at the shoulder and his right leg was broken through the kneecap. According to Hines' inscription on this photo, "No attention was paid by employer to the boy either in hospital or at home . . . no compensation." August 1908 photo.
