THE SOCIAL INSURANCE MOVEMENT--The 1912 Presidential Election gggff

The third-party candidacy of Theodore Roosevelt for President in 1912 was an important milestone for the cause of social insurance in America. The Progressive Party's campaign platform, calling for European-style social insurance in the U.S., was the first time a major political party had openly advocated social insurance. Although TR's attempt to recapture the Presidency was unsuccessful, his candidacy in 1912 marked the entry of social insurance into the national political mainstream.
